Why do we kill non-aggressive monsters in MMOs? Featured

So why do we kill non-aggressive monsters in-game? I mean they will not attack us unless we provoke them. It seems kind of cruel doesn't it? They are just roaming around, minding their own business and we the players come around and provoke them so we can take their items and get a bit of experience.

I can understand killing those freaky evil non-aggressive monsters. Sometimes there are creatures that should be killed because they are so scary, like clowns. Or if you see a monster that just looks mean enough to be aggressive you kill them for the 'just in case' factor.

But there are plenty of monsters that do nothing except wait to be killed. Some are cute and others are usually animals like deer and rabbits. They are in every game and there seems to be no reason to kill them except to exploit their goods and experience.

So are we just mean and want to pick on the non-aggressive? Or maybe its just we are afraid they might grow into something bigger later on. Still I don't see why I must kill so many cows to get a few bottles of milk for my quest. Would it not be easier just to milk the cow?

Whats your reason to kill non-aggressive monsters?
